CASH records with deep sadness the passing of Chen Ning Chi on 18 March 2025. It is a huge loss to both the Society and all musicians in the Hong Kong music scene.
Chen Ning Chi was one of the founding members of CASH and has supported the Society for many years. The Society awarded him the ‘CASH Hall of Fame Award’ in 2015 in recognition of his significant achievements to the music industry.
Chen has been active in the serious music circle for over 50 years. Under his belt, he has over a hundred pieces of composition in both Chinese and Western music genres. Chen’s pursuit of breakthrough has allowed him to extend his composing talent greatly not only to instrumental pieces but also to various kinds of stage productions like musicals, Chinese dance opera, classical opera and symphonic poem. His significant work included the Chinese ensemble The Ancient Capital, the choral work The Chariots Rattle On, the piano work Reminiscence of Chibi and the orchestral work Ode to the Bounteous Land, etc. Reminiscence of Chibi won the ‘1994 CASH Golden Sail Most Performed Works Awards – Local Serious Work’.
In 1977, Chen has assisted in establishing the professional Urban Council Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra where the concept of “Symphonization of Chinese music” was voiced, and served as the Assistant Music Director and other positions at the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra from 1993 to 2002, making significant contributions to the promotion of Chinese music culture.
We will always remember his dedication to music creation and his music has enriched the local music scene. May he rest in peace and our deepest condolences to his family.
